The Five Pieces That Carry a Whole Season
Open most wardrobes and you will find far more than gets worn. After years of helping customers choose, we notice the same handful of pieces doing nearly all the work.
A knit that goes with everything
A well-made sweater in a neutral shade is the piece most women reach for without thinking. Look for a weave that holds its shape at the cuffs and hem, because that is where a cheap knit gives itself away first.
One dress you can dress up or down
A midi in a plain colour or a quiet print works for lunch, for church, for a birthday dinner. Add a cardigan and flats for daytime, swap to heels for the evening. One dress, two lives.
Trousers that fit properly
Wide-leg or tailored, the test is the same: they should sit comfortably at the waist without a belt doing the work. Anything you have to keep adjusting will stay in the wardrobe.
A coat that finishes the outfit
You will wear it over almost everything for half the year, so it is worth more thought than the things underneath it. Camel, navy and charcoal go with the most.
Boots you can stand up in all day
Comfort is not the opposite of smart. A boot with a modest block heel and a proper footbed will carry you further than anything you have to think about.
