Looking After Knitwear So It Lasts

Knitwear does not need much. It needs the right small things, done occasionally, rather than a lot of attention all at once.

Fold, do not hang

A hanger pulls the shoulders out of shape and leaves two little peaks you cannot press out. Fold knits and stack them instead. If drawer space is tight, fold once more rather than hanging.

Wash less often than you think

Most sweaters need airing rather than washing. When they do need it, cool water and a gentle cycle, inside out. Hot water is what makes wool shrink and cotton go slack.

Dry flat

Lay it on a towel and reshape it while damp. Hanging a wet knit stretches it lengthways and it will not recover.

Deal with pilling early

Pills come from friction, not poor quality — usually under the arms and at the sides. A sweater comb or a fabric shaver takes them off in a couple of minutes and the piece looks new again. Do it when you notice them rather than once a year.
